Travels at Twelve: A Botanical Paradise: Kazakhstan & the Altai Mountains
February 10, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmFREE
Join Paul Meyer for an illustrated lecture on his botanical travels in northeast Kazakhstan. Few travelers from the western world have visited this extraordinarily beautiful region, noted for its rich steppe and alpine flora. In addition, he will share stories of the people, architecture and culture.
Paul Meyer is the Retired F. Otto Haas Executive Director of the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania.
In his 43 year tenure at the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, Paul Meyer played a major role in the restoration of the Arboretum’s historic gardens, architecture, and extraordinary plant collections, and rebuilt its financial foundations. He has taught Urban Horticulture in the University of Pennsylvania’s Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning Department and is a frequent contributor to horticultural publications.
Meyer is a world traveler and a leader in the field of plant exploration and evaluation. He has completed twelve expeditions to countries including China, Korea, Taiwan, Armenia and the Republic of Georgia, where he has collected plants from various sources to introduce greater genetic diversity.
He has received national recognition for his leadership and accomplishments at both the Morris Arboretum and in the broader community. Recent awards include the American Public Garden Association Lifetime Membership Award, Arthur Hoyt Scott Medal, Wyck-Strickland Award, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Award from the American Horticultural Society, and the Montgomery County 2016 Planning Advocate Award.
Meyer is a co-author of Philadelphia Trees: A Field Guide to the City and the Surrounding Delaware Valley (Spring 2017).
