A Winter Celebration: Understanding Biophilia: How Plants Make a Difference in Healing

January 22, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Come in from the cold and enjoy a pre-lecture cocktail or glass of wine with friends at the Inn at Swarthmore.

Learn from local landscape architect Jonathan Alderson as he explores two award-winning case studies of biophilia used in healthcare design. Biophilia is defined as the innate human instinct to connect with nature and other living beings. Through his visual presentation, Jonathan will show how healthcare design is becoming more sensitive to the needs of communities and the environment and how biophillic, or healthcare design, promotes physical, social, and mental well-being. Examples of this type of design are living walls, skylights, and the presence of water. He will identify plant species that thrive, and plant species that do not do well, in healthcare facility spaces, as well as the ongoing maintenance issues and costs these designs inevitably have. Jonathan will discuss important lessons that have been learned and share considerations for future designs.

Engage in great conversation during the delightfully casual reception with tasty hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar with wine, beer, and cocktails.

Jonathan Alderson is the founder and principal of Jonathan Alderson Landscape Architects, Inc. Since 1998 his firm has been creating beautiful, environmentally-minded landscapes that invite exploration. His designs are informed by an intimate understanding of the Mid-Atlantic region, its landscape, and its history. The use of native plants and local materials, combined with a strong regard for site and ecology, creates landscapes rooted in the local vernacular. Institutional projects include the creation of an 86-acre meadow garden for Longwood Gardens, the accessibility ramp and surrounding garden at Chanticleer, and the gardens that will eventually surround the new Dining Hall and Community Commons that is under construction at the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College.
